Prominent Ear Correction

What is otoplasty surgery?

Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery, is a plastic and reconstructive procedure aimed at improving the size, shape, or position of the outer ear by reshaping the underlying cartilage. The primary purpose of otoplasty is to correct ears that protrude or stick out, commonly referred to as ear pinning. However, it can also be utilised to address birth defects affecting the ear’s cartilage or lobe shape, reduce the apparent size of the ears, or correct asymmetry between the ears.  It is important to note that each person’s ears have natural variations, so the goal of otoplasty is to improve the aesthetic appearance within reasonable limits

Who will benefit from otoplasty?

Otoplasty is suitable for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Individuals in good overall health with realistic expectations.
  • Individuals who are self-conscious about the size or shape of their ears.
  • Individuals who have unusually-shaped ears, ears that are large and stick out (‘bat ears’) or ears that are different from each other (asymmetry).

Note that, patients with bleeding disorders, impaired wound healing, or significant medical conditions that could pose risks during anaesthesia or elective surgery may not be suitable candidates for otoplasty.

Frequently asked questions

Otoplasty typically involves making incisions behind the ears to access and reshape the cartilage. The surgeon may use techniques such as cartilage scoring, suturing, or excision to reshape and reposition the ears, creating a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

During ear reshaping surgery, local anesthesia or sedation is typically used to ensure that you do not experience pain or discomfort during the procedure. However, after the procedure, it is normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and mild pain around the treated area. Your surgeon will provide pain medication and specific post-operative instructions to manage any discomfort during the recovery period.

The results of ear reshaping surgery are typically long-lasting and can be considered permanent. The final results will become more apparent as the initial swelling subsides, usually within a few weeks, although it may take several months for the ears to fully settle into their new shape. It is important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions and allow yourself adequate time to heal for optimal results.

Yes, after ear reshaping surgery, it is common to wear a bandage or dressing over the ears for a period of time to protect the surgical area and promote proper healing. The specific duration and type of bandage will depend on your surgeon’s preference and the extent of the procedure.

Yes, there is typically some downtime after ear reshaping surgery. Most individuals can expect to take about one to two weeks off work or school to allow for proper healing and recovery. During this time, you will need to avoid activities that could strain or impact the ears and follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions for optimal healing.

The visibility of scars after ear reshaping surgery can vary depending on the specific techniques used and individual healing factors. In most cases, the incisions are strategically placed behind the ears or within natural creases to minimize the visibility of scars. Over time, the scars tend to fade and become less noticeable, but it is important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions to optimize the healing process.

Otoplasty and pinnaplasty are essentially the same procedure and are often used interchangeably. Both terms refer to the surgical reshaping or correction of the ears to address issues such as protruding or misshapen ears.

After a pinnaplasty or ear reshaping surgery, it is generally recommended to avoid wearing glasses that rest on or put pressure on the ears for at least a few weeks. This allows sufficient time for proper healing and reduces the risk of disrupting the surgical area. It is best to consult with your surgeon for specific guidance on when it is safe to resume wearing glasses.

No, otoplasty, which is the surgical reshaping of the ears, typically does not affect hearing. The procedure focuses on altering the external appearance of the ears and does not involve any modifications to the inner ear or structures related to hearing.

Yes, children can have ear pinning surgery, also known as pinnaplasty or otoplasty, to correct prominent or misshapen ears. The ideal age for this surgery is usually around 5 to 6 years old when the ears have reached near full development, but it can also be performed on older children and adults. It is important to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon who specializes in pediatric otoplasty to determine the most appropriate timing and candidacy for the procedure.

Yes, ear surgery can be performed to correct stretched or gauged earlobes. The procedure typically involves removing the excess stretched tissue and reshaping the earlobe to restore a more natural appearance. It is important to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon who specializes in earlobe repair to assess your specific situation and discuss the available options for correcting stretched ears.

Like any surgical procedure, pinnaplasty carries some risks and potential complications. These can include infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, asymmetry, changes in sensation, scarring, and dissatisfaction with the aesthetic outcome. It is important to discuss these risks with your surgeon and ensure that you are a suitable candidate for the procedure before moving forward.
